The Colorado shootings

A gunman opens fire at a crowded movie premire.  A sad day...12 dead, up to 40 others wounded, some children.  Now...the blame game starts.  I've already seen blame cast to the President, video games, the "war on religion", Republicans, Democrats, the NRA, the ACLU...you name it, people are blaming it.

James Holmes.  That's the shooter's name.  THAT is who is to blame.  He made a choice to carry out a horrific act of mass violence.  Why?  Personally, I don't care why.  He can name any reason under the sun...as far as I'm concerned, no "reason" he can give explains or excuses what he did.  No one forced him to do what he did.  Plenty of people play video games, hold various religious views, are of various political persuasions, have guns or don't have guns, you name it...but the vast majority of all of those widely varied people do NOT commit mass murder.

So what do we do?  Put in airport style security checkpoints at movies?  We already have that in place not only for airports, but for places like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Super Bowl and World Series and other major sporting events.  We are slowly turning into prisoners of our own safety.  It's becoming just as insane as Holmes' lawyers will surely argue he is.

I don't know what to do to stop this sort of thing.  I do know this...it's not the NRA's fault.  It's not President Obama's fault, it's not Republicans or Democratic, we can't blame Bush or Clinton.  Video games didn't do this.  It has nothing to do with religion, politics, or gun control.  There is, at this point, one person who is responsible...James Holmes.  He made a choice.  He needs to pay for that choice.  So let's stop blaming every person or institution we disagree with, let's stop making political/religious statements and trying to score cheap points in our ongoing "culture war" over this.

We lost 12 of our own...fellow human beings.  Innocent people.  It would be decent if people could stop making it an opportunity to grind axes.
