Memorial Day

May 28th, 2012, is set aside to remember the sacrifice of the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have given their lives so that we may live this day, as all days, as free Americans. I've known some of these fallen heroes myself, and not a day passes that I don't think of them, and realize how fortunate I, and the rest of us, are to be here, enjoying freedom and life in a nation that should remember all too well that freedom is often not free. Particularly for me, the loss of my fellow submariners, from the early days of the submarine force, through WWII and the Cold War, to those lost aboard subs in the present day.

We use many words to describe what they gave..."ultimate sacrifice" is a common phrase. But none of us alive can truly understand what they gave. From the 1700's to today, American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen have willingly given their lives to keep us safe. To all those who have fallen, in every war everywhere, let's all stand and salute them, and appreciate what they gave us.
