On this day in 1776 the Continental Congress approved the wording of the Declaration of Independence (the subject of declaring independence had been decided on July 2nd), and formally authorized publication of the Declaration of Independence. Thus the United States of American recognizes July 4th, 1776, as the official date of it's creation as a sovereign nation.
