The California Assembly voted Tuesday to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry, making the state's legislature the first in the nation to deliberately approve same-sex marriages and handing a political hot potato to an already beleaguered Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R).
I wonder, when he vetos it, what bullshit reason he'll use. Seems if the legislature passes it and there's no good legal reason to veto...but hey, he's a Republican, can't be soft on gays or tolerant, or anything like that...
I heard on NPR that the Governator is claiming it should be left to the courts. Interesting opinion, as the courts have generally been finding in favor of gays (see Massachusetts). And most in the GOP claim this is judicial activism and should be handled by legislatures or the people.
Maybe he figures the Supreme Court will ax it once Bush gets done re-molding it in his extremist fashion. That must be the court he's referring to.
